A study of five U.S. cities, New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, Des Moines, and Jackson, Wyoming was conducted to analyze how much land and money is being devoted to parking.

Key findings

Only New York has fewer parking spots than households. Seattle has 5 spots for every household, Philadelphia has 3.7, Des Moines has 19.4 and Jackson has 27.1.

“The report estimates that among the five cities analyzed here, parking was worth roughly $81 billion.”

“In Seattle, which is in dire need of new affordable housing, 40% of the land area is currently used for parking.”
