Making the Most of the Curb: Managing passenger and parcel pick-up and drop-off on congested city streets

With the rapid growth of ride-hailing services, e-commerce and on-demand deliveries, demand for curb space has increased in urban areas.

Key findings

Curb management can improve traffic safety, reduce congestion, and make neighborhoods more walkable and livable.

A curb study in Santa Monica of ride-hailing service vehicles showed that 44% of vehicles had to double park for passenger pick-ups and drop-offs.

On average these ride-hailing vehicles were double-parked for an average of 37 total minutes per hour, resulting in a 58% reduction in hourly traffic flow.
