Connected/Automated Vehicles

Connected/Automated Vehicles

This resource provides an overview of what technologies connected and automated include and some of the impacts they will have on safety and other transportation issues.

Key findings

Connected vehicles combine several technologies to provide the capability for vehicles to identify threats hazards on the road and communicate those obstacles to drivers through a wireless network.

Automated vehicles are vehicles where some (or all) safety-critical control functions are done without driver input.

Automated and connected vehicle technologies are rapidly growing and could have significant impacts on safety, mobility, energy consumption, efficiency, sustainability, and land use.
