This report was developed to inform a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) workshop, held in September 2015, exploring emerging technological trends in transportation. This paper provides an overview of select developing transportation technologies and includes a discussion of the policy implications of these new technological trends.

Key findings



Insurance and liability issues should be of huge importance to transportation companies, if drivers are not in control of the vehicle then the makers may be liable in the case of any accidents.



A willing market may be a reality in the purchase of an AV, but only if the cost makes them available to the $12,000-15,000 range buyer.



Shared vehicle use could dramatically reduce VMT, costs, and emissions.


