Parklets, Everywhere

Parklets, Everywhere

San Francisco’s emerging trend of transforming parking spots into “parklets” has sparked residents, businesses and nonprofits from around the city to come up with creative ways to turn parking into public space.

Key findings

“Parklets are San Francisco’s contribution to the ever-expanding field of ‘tactical urbanism,’ a phrase used to encompass yarn bombing, food trucks, street closings, and a host of short-term activities in between.”

“As city officials talk about using parklets as systematic tools of neighborhood revival, the experiences with parklets so far suggest that they work best when they build on social and cultural aspects of a community that already exist but that don’t have a setting to flourish in public.”
