The State of the Cities 2019

This report is an analysis of 153 "state of the city" speeches by mayors between January and April of 2019. They have been analyzed to identify the 10 major issues cities are talking about and other major issues that are being prioritized across the country.

Key findings

Economic development holds the top spot for the most-covered major policy for now 6 years running. The amount that mayors discuss these issues climbed from 58% to 74% in 2019.

Issues relating to the opioid crisis dropped a few spots as urban design and landscaping of cities has increased.

It was noticed that many more mayors are talking about the health and well-being of of their communities as well as environmental issues.
